When Hendrix became an international superstar in 1967, it seemed as if he'd dropped out of a Martian spaceship, but in fact he'd served his apprenticeship the long, mundane way in numerous R&B acts on the chitlin circuit. During the early and mid-'60s, he worked with such R&B/soul greats as Little Richard, the Isley Brothers, and King Curtis as a backup guitarist.

LEON HENDRIX APPEAL DISMISSED

In a comprehensive opinion filed July 24, 2006, the (State of) Washington Court of Appeals, affirmed the November, 2004 decision denying Leon Hendrix’s challenge to the Last Will and Testament of James Allen (“Al”) Hendrix, father and sole heir of famed rock star Jimi Hendrix. The lawsuit had alleged that Janie Hendrix had unduly influenced Al Hendrix to disinherit Leon Hendrix. Leon Hendrix had argued that undue influence should have been presumed, because of Janie’s close relationship with Al. The three-judge appellate court unanimously concluded that Janie Hendrix had successfully rebutted any such presumption and the trial court’s findings were supported by the substantial evidence admitted during the eight week trial.

The Court of Appeals also rejected Leon Hendrix’s separate lawsuit alleging that Janie had “tortious interference with [his] inheritance expectancy".” On appeal, Leon argued that even though the will contest had been dismissed, he should be permitted to bring a separate lawsuit against Janie e permitted to bring a separate lawsuit against Janie Hendrix based on the same facts. Rejecting that argument, the Court of Appeals held: “We decline to adopt the tort of interference with an inheritance expectancy on the facts of this case, give that Leon’s tort claim arises out of the same nucleus of facts as his will contest and his allegations are duplicative.”

On hearing of the Court’s decision, Janie Hendrix expressed satisfaction that this unfortunate challenge to Al Hendrix’s last wishes is, at last, nearing a conclusion. “All of us at Experience Hendrix are looking forward to continuing our efforts to maintain and protect the legacy of Jimi Hendrix, keeping his music alive for generations to come,” she commented. “That work is the fulfillment of my father’s vision and we will strive to honor his wishes now and in the future.”

The Gazette reported that singer-songwriter Janis Ian was first asked to write her autobiography when she was 16 - a year after she recorded her first big hit. She turned 55 on Friday and has decided the time is right to get something about her life on record. It will happen next year, she said.

"I was talking to a young musician and Jimi Hendrix came up," she explained in a telephone interview. "I said something about Jimi, and he just looked at me and stared: 'You knew Jimi Hendrix?' And I thought, 'Well, yeah, most of my contemporaries knew Jimi. We all knew each other. And it occurred to me that maybe I actually had something interesting to say at this point, that there's been three or four or five generations who didn't live through that era and who don't know a lot of those things."

Rock Radio reports that the cover art from the 1967 Jimi Hendrix Experience album Are You Experienced will be turned into a three-dimensional sculpture in the fall. Artist Todd McFarlane, who's created action figures of Grateful Dead singer-guitarist Jerry Garcia, AC/DC lead guitarist Angus Young, Doors frontman Jim Morrison, and the Beatles, among many others, has a new line of 3-D reproductions of classic album art. He's currently working on one for Are You Experienced, and if all goes well, it will be available in October.

This is a great recording if you can get a hold of it. There is also a VHS recording of Jimi jamming with Buddy Miles and a few other people at Newport. Very cool. Jimi really jammed for the crowd at Newport, doing a bunch of medolies of his jams. You can most likely find the video on ebay.

This is a fun and enjoyable show in the BBC studios. Jimi really tears it up with some friends in the studio. He does a crazy version of Day Tripper with It sounds like John Lennon on backup vocals. Absolutely great show, Jimi astounds them again....

This deluxe DVD release features a newly remastered and remixed audio soundtrack in 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround sound and is loaded with more than 75 minutes of previously unreleased bonus features.

The original 1973 Joe Boyd biography of Jimi Hendrix has long been considered one of the defining posthumous statements of the legendary artist's magnificent career. The Deluxe Edition features the original 103-minute theatrical film presented in its original 16:9 letterbox format and features a newly remastered 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround sound audio track. This insightful documentary presents numerous interviews with Jimi Hendrix plus several of his contemporaries, friends and family members including Pete Townshend, Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton, Little Richard, Lou Reed and his father James "Al" Hendrix.
